Senior Embedded Software Engineer

A London product company building connected industrial hardware needs a senior engineer to own the firmware on its next platform. Fully remote within the UK, with the hardware shipped to you and roughly one day a month on site if you want it.

Salary

Location

The role

This is the senior firmware seat on a small team, not a pair of hands on someone else's architecture. The current platform is an ARM Cortex-M device talking to a sensor front end and a cloud backend, and the next generation is being specified now. You would own how the firmware is structured, what the update story looks like, and how it gets tested.

The team is four engineers: two firmware, one hardware, one backend. There is a real product in the field, so you will inherit code that works and has constraints attached rather than a blank sheet.

What you would be doing

  • Owning the firmware for a Cortex-M based product, in C with some C++
  • Designing the next-generation architecture: task structure, drivers, update path
  • Writing and reviewing drivers over SPI, I2C, UART and CAN
  • Taking new board revisions through bring-up with the hardware engineer
  • Building out the automated test rig so regressions are caught before the field catches them
  • Mentoring one mid-level firmware engineer, properly rather than nominally

What the client needs

  • Several years writing production firmware in C for ARM Cortex-M
  • An RTOS in anger (FreeRTOS, Zephyr or similar), and knowing when not to use one
  • Driver work from the datasheet up, not just calling a vendor HAL
  • Board bring-up: a scope and a logic analyser are things you reach for, not things you have heard of
  • Shipped at least one product to production and dealt with what came back

Useful, not essential

  • Embedded Linux or Yocto on a second core or gateway device
  • Bootloaders, OTA update and secure boot
  • Low-power design, battery budgets and sleep-mode debugging
  • Experience setting up hardware-in-the-loop test

What is on offer

  • £70,000
  • Fully remote in the UK, with hardware sent to you
  • Permanent, full time
  • Equipment budget including bench kit
  • 25 days plus bank holidays

Who it suits

If you are a mid-level engineer who has not yet owned an architecture, this one will be a stretch and the client has been clear about that. If you have been senior for years and want to move further toward management, say so early: this role stays hands-on.

How to apply

Use the form below, or email s.mirza@semtalent.co.uk quoting SEM-2601, or call 07359 446772. Your CV is not sent to the client, or anyone else, until you have heard who they are and said yes.
